President Bola Tinubu has officially approved a ban on homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, and cross-dressing among members of the Nigerian military, emphasizing that such actions violate the ethical standards of the armed forces.
The revised guidelines also prohibit body piercing, tattooing, disorderly behaviour and drunkenness, whether on or off duty.
These stipulations are outlined in Section 26 of the updated Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, which Tinubu signed on December 16, 2024.
The document states:
“An officer must not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, or bestiality.
He/she is prohibited from being part of or participating in activities associated with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, or Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) community, including cross-dressing.
“An officer must also refrain from body piercing, tattooing, disorderly conduct, public brawls, or any actions that could result in disgrace.
Furthermore, an officer must not be intoxicated at any time, whether on or off duty.”
The guidelines also forbid officers from engaging in romantic relationships with subordinates or their spouses.
However, the document does not specify the penalties or disciplinary measures that would apply in cases of violation.
