Hon. Gloria Okolugbo, Director of Communications for Senator Ned Nwoko, has announced that the senator will be leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released on Sunday and shared with journalists, Okolugbo revealed that the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, supporters, and constituents in Delta North. She attributed the defection to Nwoko’s dissatisfaction with the PDP’s lack of support for his developmental initiatives aimed at improving the Anioma region.
“Senator Ned Nwoko came prepared to serve and deliver the dividends of good governance to the Anioma people, but regrettably, he has not enjoyed the cooperation and support of his party, the PDP, in pursuing this vision. This is despite being the only PDP senator in Delta State,” Okolugbo stated.
The senator’s frustrations include the lack of state government backing for critical projects such as the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) step-down, designed to provide electricity to over 60 communities, and the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, aimed at addressing water supply challenges in the region.
“The senator believes it is futile to remain in a party where his campaign promises to the people of Delta North cannot be fulfilled. The marginalisation of the zone has gone on for too long,” Okolugbo added.
She also disclosed that Nwoko has held discussions with APC leaders, receiving assurances of support for his developmental agenda. “This decision is not just about politics but about delivering on his electoral promises,” Okolugbo emphasised.
The defection marks a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape, particularly as Nwoko’s move to the APC could strengthen the ruling party’s influence in the region.
