South Korean police conducted raids on Thursday at the offices of Jeju Air and Muan International Airport as part of an investigation into the crash of a Boeing 737-800 that claimed 179 lives.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when the flight, carrying 181 passengers from Thailand to South Korea, issued a mayday call before belly-landing and crashing into a barrier. All but two flight attendants perished in the fiery wreckage.
Search and seizure operations were carried out at Muan Airport, the crash site of Flight 2216, as well as at Jeju Air’s office in Seoul, according to regional aviation officials and company representatives.
South Korean and U.S. investigators, including Boeing experts, have been examining the site to determine the cause of the crash. Both black boxes have been recovered, and analysis is underway.
“The search and seizure operation began at 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) on January 2 at three locations connected to the incident,” police said in a statement.
Authorities emphasized their commitment to thoroughly identifying the cause of the crash and holding responsible parties accountable in accordance with the law.
