The Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has urged the government to prohibit the movement of inflammable products on the nation’s roads during daytime hours.
Speaking in Abakaliki on Tuesday, the state commandant, Francis Nnadi, expressed deep concern over the frequent tanker explosions involving Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS), which have led to significant loss of lives. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to prevent such incidents.
Nnadi called on other security agencies to collaborate in tackling the recurring gas explosions, citing recent tragic events in Niger State and Ugwu-Onyeama, Enugu State.
“We must prevent these tankers carrying inflammable materials from operating during the day when roads are heavily congested. The government should enforce this regulation, ensuring that filling station owners and gas suppliers transport their products only when traffic is minimal, preferably at night,” Nnadi stated.
He also stressed the importance of engaging with tanker driver associations and educating them on safety measures, noting that most of these accidents occur during the day.
