The Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has highlighted the potential of the newly developed General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) to drive economic growth and improve the lives of Nigerians.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Coker-Odusote emphasized that the GMPC offers a wide range of functionalities, including online and offline identity verification, financial inclusion, social inclusion, and biometric authentication. She noted that the card was specifically designed to address critical challenges in Nigeria, particularly for unbanked populations who have been excluded from accessing essential government and private sector services.
“The beauty of this card is its multifunctionality,” she stated. “It’s not just a simple card; it allows instant identity verification both online and offline. It also facilitates financial transactions and provides access to government services. Essentially, it bridges the gap between the government and its citizens, which is a core mandate of NIMC.”
Coker-Odusote further explained that the card is designed to cater to all demographics, saying, “Whether you are illiterate, elite, poor, old, young, or a mother managing her children’s needs, this card ensures that the average Nigerian can carry out daily functions seamlessly. This is what NIMC has worked so hard to achieve with this new ID card.”
She also stated that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of a data-driven and efficient government. The GMPC will serve not only residents in Nigeria but also Nigerians in the diaspora, who will have access to a digital version of the card on their mobile devices for transactions and services.
