The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) United States chapter has strongly criticized the verbal attack on Mr. Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, by the national publicity secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following Obi’s 2025 New Year message.
In a statement signed by its President and CEO, Lloyd F. Ukwu, NADECO USA condemned the remarks as reckless and unguarded, describing them as part of a deliberate strategy to suppress dissent and intimidate a prominent advocate of democratic reforms in Nigeria.
The coalition rejected the APC’s claims that Obi left no legacy during his tenure as governor, labeling such assertions as baseless and defamatory. NADECO USA highlighted Obi’s accomplishments in governance, fiscal responsibility, and infrastructure development, which have been widely acknowledged both nationally and internationally.
“As a pro-democracy organization, NADECO USA remains committed to protecting democratic principles and the rights of all individuals, irrespective of their political affiliations,” the statement read. “Threats, intimidation, and divisive rhetoric have no place in a civil society.”
NADECO USA expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of repression by the APC under President Tinubu’s leadership, accusing the ruling party of attempting to silence critics and undermine opposition voices.
“This is not just a political maneuver; it is a direct assault on the values of democracy, accountability, and freedom of expression,” the coalition stated.
NADECO USA also commended Peter Obi for maintaining composure and urging his supporters to uphold peace and the rule of law despite repeated attacks. The coalition criticized the APC’s accusations against Obi, calling them hypocritical and baseless.
“We call on all Nigerians to reject these divisive tactics and uphold the ideals of democracy, tolerance, and mutual respect. The targeting of political opponents poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s stability and progress,” the statement added.
The coalition warned that the APC’s recent actions, including the arrest of political figures like Dele Farotimi and the attack on Obi, signal an escalating attempt to stifle opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
NADECO USA urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and resolute in defending democratic principles. It also demanded that the APC immediately cease inflammatory rhetoric and instead focus on constructive dialogue to address the nation’s pressing issues.
“NADECO will not stand idly by while coercion and threats are used to suppress political opposition and silence advocates for change,” the statement concluded.
