The Ogun State police have apprehended two security guards for allegedly igniting a fire that severely burned a 44-year-old man named Basiru Aliu in Agura Sabo, located in the Sagamu area.
This information was shared in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, which was obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday.
According to the statement, suspects Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan mistakenly identified the victim as a thief while he was assisting his employer in moving belongings from a previous residence to a new location in Ijokun.
Odutola reported that the guards attacked Aliu and subsequently set him ablaze. The incident was brought to the police’s attention by Fatai Ifekoya, the victim’s employer.
Odutola explained, “Aliu was reportedly assisting his employer, Fatai Ifekoya, in the relocation of items from his old home to a new site in Ijokun around 7 a.m. on Monday. While performing this task, he was violently confronted by Sodiya and Abatan, who were employed as security guards by a local resident, Kingsley Nwabueze.
“The two suspects allegedly doused Aliu with a flammable substance and set him on fire, under the false assumption that he was attempting to steal the belongings.”
She confirmed that the suspects have been arrested and will face charges of attempted murder. Odutola urged community members to report any suspicious activities to the police instead of resorting to violence.
