The military high command has announced plans to potentially collaborate with law-abiding local manufacturers in the production of firearms and military-grade equipment, signalling a shift toward leveraging domestic expertise to boost national defence.
This announcement was made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, during an operational visit to frontline troops of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State.
The CDS emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to ending the proliferation of illegal arms in the country.
The visit included a review of a cache of locally made arms and ammunition seized within operational areas, highlighting the capabilities of local manufacturers.
Gen. Musa revealed that the military is considering engaging these skilled individuals through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to support lawful production efforts.
As part of his tour, the CDS first visited the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, where he was welcomed by the General Officer Commanding and inspected the quarter guard.
He also visited Sector 8 of Operation Safe Haven in Mangu, where he inspected military hardware and operational equipment at a forward operations base.
During his visit, Gen. Musa assured the troops of additional resources, including advanced weaponry, vehicles, and improved welfare packages, to enhance their operational effectiveness. He urged the soldiers to intensify their efforts by taking the fight to criminal hideouts, ensuring a decisive victory against insurgents in the new year.
Gen. Musa reiterated the importance of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights in military operations. He commended the troops for their dedication to maintaining peace and security despite the challenges they face.
The military’s consideration of local arms manufacturers is expected to not only strengthen its operational capacity but also curb the production of illegal arms while fostering lawful innovation within the defence sector.
