A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Fouad Oki, has called on Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, to focus on his legislative responsibilities or step aside completely.
Obasa was impeached last Monday, as reported by News Bulletin, although he insists he remains the Speaker, alleging that his removal was carried out using a fake mace.
Following his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda was appointed as Speaker and officially assumed office on Monday.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oki advised Obasa, who represents the Agege constituency, to let go of any attempts to reclaim the speakership. He urged him to either resume his role as a legislator or resign entirely.
“Matters concerning the Lagos Assembly are now history,” Oki stated. “What we have seen in Lagos politics reflects the importance of party organization and conventions—unwritten rules that guide the system.”
He highlighted the role of hierarchy, control, and checks and balances in Lagos politics, describing the recent events as a lesson in political structure.
“There’s no shame in this. Obasa should either return to the House and fulfil his duties as a legislator or bow out gracefully and allow someone else to take the lead,” he said.
Oki further emphasized the importance of moving forward, adding, “He should continue making good laws for the people of Lagos or simply accept that leadership comes and goes. This chapter is over.”
