A group known as The Concerned Citizens has called on the Nigeria Police Force to hold officers accountable for the death of Olatunji Jimoh, a farmer from Ilorin, who allegedly died in the custody of the Kwara State Police Command on December 20, 2024.
Jimoh was reportedly arrested over a debt of N220,000 owed to Gabriel Sunday, a staff of Olam Offa. Family members suspect foul play, citing bloodstains in his cell, contradicting claims of a natural death.
Speaking at a press conference in Ilorin, the group’s convener, Owolabi Tayo, described the incident as a deliberate act of oppression and demanded a thorough investigation into the conduct of three officers who allegedly denied the deceased bail. He also called for restitution and welfare support for Jimoh’s parents and two children.
The family’s lawyer, Barr. Olukayode Oloyede criticized the delay in conducting an autopsy and expressed concern over increasing police brutality. Meanwhile, Jimoh’s mother, Mrs. Adijat Jimoh, appealed for public and governmental support to care for the children left behind.
