Trump-and-Meloni

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made an unexpected and unofficial visit to incoming U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Sunday.

Photographs released by the Italian prime minister’s office showed Meloni and Trump posing at the entrance of Mar-a-Lago and engaging in conversation in a reception room adorned with a Christmas tree.

Although no official statement has been issued by Meloni’s office regarding the visit, the images of the two conservative leaders together dominated the front pages of Italy’s newspapers on Sunday.

Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, is among several foreign leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who have visited Trump ahead of his second-term inauguration on January 20.

The visit comes just days before a four-day trip to Rome by outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, who is expected to hold meetings with Meloni and Pope Francis during his stay.
