Costas Simitis, a prominent figure in Greece’s political history and a former prime minister, passed away on Sunday at the age of 88. His death marks the end of an era for a leader celebrated for his modernization efforts and pivotal role in shaping Greece’s future.
The Greek government announced four days of mourning to honor Simitis, a founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). He succeeded PASOK’s founder, Andreas Papandreou, as party leader and served as Greece’s prime minister from 1996 to 2004.
Current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences, calling Simitis a “worthy and noble political opponent” who guided Greece through key national milestones. These included the country’s accession to the eurozone and Cyprus’ entry into the European Union.
Mitsotakis highlighted Simitis’ efforts to modernize Greece’s economy and society through privatization and fiscal stability, culminating in the adoption of the euro in 2001. He praised Simitis as a leader whose vision and reforms left a profound and lasting impact on Greece’s development.
