The Federal Government and the Enugu State Government have officially signed a host state agreement for the 2026 National Sports Festival, granting Enugu full hosting rights for the event scheduled to take place in the South East state.

The agreement was signed at the Enugu Government House by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, representing the Federal Government, and Governor Peter Mbah on behalf of Enugu State.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders for entrusting Enugu with the hosting rights. He assured that the state would deliver an unforgettable event for athletes, sports enthusiasts, and the nation at large.

“We deeply appreciate the confidence placed in us to host the 23rd National Sports Festival. Enugu is committed to delivering an extraordinary experience that will remain a lifelong memory for all participants and spectators,” Mbah stated.

Highlighting the state’s preparations, the governor revealed that efforts were already underway to upgrade existing facilities and construct new ones.

“Immediately after the announcement, we mobilized our team to begin revamping the Awgu Games Village and other facilities. We are committed to delivering a brand-new Games Village and completely renovating the stadium. By the end of this year, visitors will witness a world-class sporting infrastructure that reflects our commitment to excellence,” Mbah added.

In his remarks, Hon. Olopade commended Enugu’s robust bid, improved security, and Governor Mbah’s vision for enhancing sports and social infrastructure. He noted that these factors were key in granting the state hosting rights for the festival, which will follow the 22nd edition set to take place in Ogun State.

“The 2026 National Sports Festival will not only boost sports development but also drive investment and tourism in Enugu before, during, and after the event,” Olopade said.

The festival promises to be a milestone event, showcasing Enugu as a hub for sports and cultural excellence in Nigeria.
