Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, on Wednesday.
Yusuf, a professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation, was taken from his Abuja residence around 4:46 pm in the presence of his wife and children. He was then transported to an undisclosed location.
While the specific reason for his arrest remains unknown, sources suggest it may be linked to his tenure at NHIS. An insider stated, “The details of his arrest cannot be disclosed yet as investigations are ongoing. However, he is currently in custody assisting with inquiries.”
In 2019, Yusuf was dismissed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, following a fact-finding panel’s recommendation. The panel, set up by the Federal Ministry of Health, accused him of mismanaging N919 million.
