The Federal Government has rebuked former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, over his recent criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, issued a statement early Thursday, addressing Sanusi’s remarks made during a public event in Lagos. Idris noted that while the government recognizes Sanusi’s right to express opinions, it finds his comments contradictory and driven by personal grievances.
Idris stated, “Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture where bold and decisive actions are necessary to tackle entrenched economic challenges. This administration has implemented transformative reforms not because they are easy, but because they are essential for securing Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, as Emir Sanusi himself had consistently advocated.”
He emphasized that temporary hardships resulting from these reforms, including subsidy removal and exchange rate unification, are necessary to address decades of economic mismanagement. Idris highlighted measurable progress, such as improved investor confidence, increased foreign reserves, and reduced debt service-to-revenue ratios, as signs of the reforms’ effectiveness.
The government expressed disappointment that Sanusi, known for his economic expertise, appeared to shift his stance due to personal discontent. Idris stated, “It is deeply disappointing that reforms widely recognized as essential by global experts—including Emir Sanusi II himself—are now being subtly condemned by him because of a shift in loyalty.”
He urged Sanusi to prioritize national interests over personal grievances and to contribute constructively to Nigeria’s development rather than undermining government efforts.
Idris concluded by calling for unity among stakeholders, emphasizing the need for collaboration rather than divisive rhetoric. He reiterated that the Tinubu administration remains committed to achieving economic sustainability and prosperity for all Nigerians.
“This is a critical time for our country; what is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions. Together, we will deliver on the promise of renewed hope and a better Nigeria for all,” Idris said.
