A group of elders from the Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over alleged anti-party activities by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Operating under the aegis of the “Concerned Leaders of the PDP,” the group called on Oborevwori to address rumors of his alleged defection plans to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement signed by Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, the group demanded clarity, stating:
“The rumour mills are agog with stories of your intention to cross-carpet to the APC. You have allegedly been secretly engaging with top aides of His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Reports suggest that presidential aides and allies of the president are working to facilitate a meeting between you and President Tinubu.
“Your ultimate goal, as pointed out by those close to you, is to gain approval to join the APC. This has left us deeply troubled by these flying and unconfirmed rumours.
“We demand a prompt clarification from you to reassure us of your commitment to the PDP. A delayed response could be seen as glaring evidence of your compromised position.”
In response, Festus Ahon, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Oborevwori, dismissed the accusations, attributing them to opposition politicians attempting to stir controversy.
He stated, “These individuals are not PDP members. They are political elements seeking to heat up the polity. The governor remains committed to his party and has no plans to defect to the APC.”
The allegations come amid growing speculation about potential defections within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Oborevwori’s political future now under scrutiny.
