The Osun State Government has reiterated its commitment to resolving the ongoing communal clashes between Ilobu and Ifon Orolu communities, stating that the curfew imposed on the areas will remain until lasting peace is restored.
The curfew, which runs from 7pm to 7am, was imposed last Thursday by Governor Ademola Adeleke following renewed violence between the two communities.
The clashes resulted in injuries and the tragic death of a polytechnic student in Ilobu, prompting the deployment of security operatives, including the Army, Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to maintain order.
Addressing the situation on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Mr. Samuel Ojo, disclosed that relative calm had returned to the communities.
However, he emphasised that the government is taking a critical approach to resolving the conflict and preventing future hostilities.
“For now, the two communities have sheathed their swords, and the government is working diligently to bring both sides to an agreement. A powerful committee comprising stakeholders from both communities, including their monarchs and key members of the state government and judiciary, will soon be unveiled to proffer lasting solutions,” Ojo said.
On the possibility of lifting the curfew, Ojo maintained, “The state government is not lifting any curfew now. It will only be reconsidered after the committee is set up and we are assured that peace has fully returned to the two communities. For now, the status quo remains.”
Meanwhile, the World Institute for Peace, a non-governmental organisation, has urged the Osun State Government to demonstrate greater commitment to addressing the root causes of the conflict.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Executive Director, Lamina Kamiludeen, the organization expressed concern over the resurgence of violence, attributing it to inadequate engagement and mediation efforts after previous conflicts.
“It is evident that the Osun State government possesses the authority and resources necessary to intervene effectively in this situation. We urge the government to prioritize the establishment of a robust committee dedicated to peace-building.
“This committee should comprise experts in conflict resolution, security, and humanitarian affairs, rather than relying on politically exposed individuals who may lack the necessary expertise to mediate effectively,” the statement read.
The organisation called for proactive measures to address the deep-seated issues fueling the hostility, urging the government to act decisively to ensure enduring peace in Ilobu and Ifon Orolu.
