Court Orders Restoration Of Suspended Edo LG Chairmen

A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt on Monday removed Chukwuemeka Aaron as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Aaron, a staunch ally of former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, was dismissed following the court’s nullification of the PDP ward, local government, and state congresses conducted in July 2024.

Justice Stephen Jumbo, in his ruling, declared the congresses invalid, citing irregularities. This decision comes just a month after another High Court similarly nullified the congresses of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, resulting in the removal of Chief Tony Okocha, another Wike loyalist, as the state APC chairman.

The court’s verdict followed a legal dispute over the legitimacy of the PDP congresses, which were reportedly organized by a faction of the party aligned with Wike.

Earlier, on July 20, 2024, Justice Charles Wali of a Rivers State High Court had issued an order halting the PDP from proceeding with the congresses.
