…President Reaffirms Commitment to Armed Forces’ Welfare
…Advocates for Local Production of Military Equipment
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigeria’s armed forces. Speaking on Thursday at the groundbreaking ceremony of a new Defence Complex and the inauguration of an army barracks named in his honor in Abuja, the President expressed his gratitude for the dedication and sacrifices of military personnel.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu lauded the efforts of the armed forces under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
“This occasion marks not just the beginning of a construction project but also the foundation of our renewed commitment to the military and the democratic values we hold dear. As your Commander-in-Chief, I pledge unwavering support for our troops and their families,” Tinubu said.
The President emphasized the importance of a well-equipped, professional military, describing it as a source of national pride.
“I commend the resilience and courage of our armed forces who stand guard against forces that threaten our peace and development. This new Defence Complex will symbolize our respect for your service and our commitment to providing the resources you need to excel,” he said.
The complex, once completed, will serve as a hub for excellence and a monument to national unity. Tinubu assured attendees that the first phase of the project would be completed within his administration’s tenure.
Highlighting efforts to strengthen domestic defence capabilities, Tinubu announced progress in local production of military equipment.
“Our military-industrial complex is making strides, thanks to research and development by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, the Command Engineering Depot of the Nigerian Army, and private entities like EPAIL and ProForce. Today, I am proud to unveil Tactical Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) produced in Nigeria. These innovations will enhance operational efficiency and contribute to our economy,” he stated.
President Tinubu urged Nigerians to work together for a brighter future, noting that the groundbreaking event, following the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, honors those who sacrificed for the nation’s peace and security.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the new Defence Complex as essential, noting that the current Garki headquarters, initially intended as a temporary office, was no longer adequate. He said the facility would symbolize the modernization and dedication of Nigeria’s armed forces.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed gratitude to the President for his support and assured him of the army’s loyalty and commitment to the nation.
Prominent attendees included Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau (representing the Senate President), Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajuddeen Abbas, Senator Ahmad Lawan, Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris Malagi, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Service Chiefs, and other top military officials.
