Social crusader Engr. Chidi Anokwu has called for an end to the reckless attacks on military personnel across Nigeria.
In recent days, several military personnel have lost their lives while providing security to communities under threat, according to DAILY POST reports.
Speaking in Port Harcourt during this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, Anokwu, who serves as the International President of De Norsemen Kclub International, condemned the killings and urged better care and appreciation for the armed forces.
Highlighting the immeasurable sacrifices made by military personnel, he said:
“We are immensely proud of our armed forces and the good work they do in defending us, especially our democracy.
“While we sleep in our homes, they stay awake in the bushes, protecting us from enemies. With roofs over our heads, they stand guard on the roads, night and day, ensuring our safety. We deeply appreciate them and will always support them in our own ways.
“We understand the significance of sacrifice and service, which is why we join other well-meaning Nigerians to celebrate our military personnel and honor those who have fallen.”
Anokwu urged Nigerians to show respect for military personnel and work towards safeguarding their lives.
“As people of goodwill, we must respect and protect members of the armed forces.
“We strongly condemn the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of military personnel across the country. A soldier is not just a uniform; they are brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, friends, and above all, human beings.
“They deserve to live like the rest of us. We must help protect their lives by providing credible intelligence about the hideouts of criminals.”
He also commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for making the celebration more inclusive by honoring both living and fallen heroes.
“It is commendable that the Chief of Defence Staff has adjusted the occasion to be known as the ‘Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.’ This is an apt move. While we remember the fallen heroes, we must also celebrate those still in service.
“However, prioritizing the welfare of living heroes is crucial. They need modern equipment to combat insecurity effectively, and their living conditions and welfare packages must be improved.
“At the same time, the bad eggs within the military who harass and extort innocent citizens must be identified and severely punished.”
Anokwu concluded by reiterating his support for the armed forces and emphasizing the need for national unity in safeguarding their welfare.
