Kaduna-based public commentator, Mahdi Shehu, was on Tuesday remanded at the Kaduna Correctional Service facility following his arraignment at the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Kaduna.
Shehu faces two charges: conspiracy, aiding and abetting terrorism under Section 26 (2)(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and inciting public disturbances under Section 78 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
The charges stem from a post on his X account, where Shehu alleged plans by the federal government to establish a French military base in northeastern Nigeria, a claim attributed to Niger Republic military leader Abdourahamane Tchiani. The Nigerian government has since refuted the claim.
Shehu was recently arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) and subsequently arraigned for prosecution.
Magistrate Abubakar Lamido ordered Shehu’s remand at the correctional facility and adjourned the case until January 14, 2025, for further proceedings.
