…PDP Leaders Urge Delta Governor to Address Defection Rumors
ABUJA—Strong indications suggest that several governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Sources reveal that the potential defections are linked to ongoing internal crises within the PDP, particularly at the National Working Committee (NWC), state, and zonal levels.
According to reports, some PDP governors have already begun visiting President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, while others are inviting him to commission projects in their states, where discussions about possible defections are reportedly ongoing.
Senator Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, is allegedly spearheading efforts to woo the PDP governors as part of a strategy to expand the APC’s influence.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has come under scrutiny following remarks urging Deltans to support President Tinubu’s administration. At the Delta State Communication Workshop, Oborevwori, represented by his Commissioner for Information, Ifeanyi Osuoza, reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Meanwhile, a group of concerned PDP leaders in Delta State has urged Oborevwori to address rumors of his alleged plans to defect to the APC. In an open letter signed by Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, the group demanded clarity on the governor’s political stance.
The letter read in part:
“We, the concerned leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State, are compelled to address you in this open letter regarding disturbing rumors of your alleged plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress to secure your governorship seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The rumors suggest secret interactions with top aides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to facilitate your defection. We demand a prompt clarification to reassure us of your commitment to the PDP.”
President Tinubu has recently praised PDP governors for their leadership and developmental strides. During his visit to Enugu State, Tinubu lauded Governor Peter Mbah for his focus on technological advancements and partnerships with the private sector.
Similarly, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang was among those who visited Tinubu at his Lagos residence during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The increasing interactions between PDP governors and APC leadership are fueling speculation about further defections as political alignments take shape ahead of 2027.
