The Nigeria Police Force, Zone Six, has confirmed the arrest and detention of Mr. JoePaul Obi Osowo, a journalist, human rights activist, and government critic associated with the “Obedient Movement.”
Social media commentators have accused the police of wrongful detention. However, in a statement released on Friday night, Zone Six Public Relations Officer (PRO), SP Nelson Okpabi, clarified that Osowo’s arrest was linked to allegations of fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses, as outlined in a petition filed by his cousin.
“For the record, Mr. Osowo is currently in lawful custody at the Zone Six Police facility following a court order. His detention is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses, as detailed in the petition submitted by his cousin,” the statement read.
SP Okpabi further noted that Osowo had been formally served with the court charge sheet in the presence of his legal counsel and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, December 16, 2024.
He emphasized the police’s commitment to professional and ethical standards, assuring that the investigation is being conducted transparently and in accordance with due process.
SP Okpabi also urged the public to disregard misleading claims circulating online, reiterating the police’s resolve to uphold justice and ensure fairness in their operations.
