The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has announced that the Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company (WRPC) in Delta State is now operational.
The facility, which has a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day, is running despite being yet to reach 100% completion.
Speaking during a facility tour on Monday, Kyari addressed skepticism about the refinery’s progress.
“Many people doubt such achievements in our country, but we want to show that this is real,” he stated.
Kyari was joined on the tour by Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Established in 1978 and located in Ekpan, Uvwie, and Ubeji areas of Warri, the refinery was designed to serve markets in Nigeria’s southern and southwestern regions.
It also houses a petrochemical plant producing 13,000 metric tons of polypropylene and 18,000 metric tons of carbon black annually.
