An examination of the proposed 2025 budget presented to the National Assembly indicates that the Nigerian government intends to allocate N298.3 million for the renovation of the Vice President’s guest house in 2025.
In addition, N466.8 million is earmarked for renovations of the Vice President’s quarters at the State House, Presidential Villa.
This spending plan comes in the context of the government’s commitment to practicing fiscal prudence.
Data from the public payments portal Govspend reveals that the Presidency spent N156.5 million on upgrading the presidential quarters in August 2024.
Further analysis by SaharaReporters of data from the Open Treasury Portal found that in May 2024, President Bola Tinubu’s administration allocated N3.6 billion for the rehabilitation and renovation of residential buildings, alongside an additional N8.5 billion for the construction of office facilities, resulting in a total expenditure of N12.1 billion for that month.
These expenditures have raised questions regarding accountability and the responsible management of government funds, particularly against the backdrop of the nation’s ongoing financial constraints. The government is set to spend N15 trillion of its N34 trillion revenue on debt servicing.
