Labour Party leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emphasized the need for transparency and public engagement in the Federal Government’s proposed tax reform.

In a post on his X handle on Monday, Obi acknowledged the importance of tax reform but stressed that it should be pursued with the involvement of the populace and not solely for government benefit.

“Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reforms must be subject to robust public debate,” he stated.

Obi called for public hearings on the matter, emphasizing the need for Nigerians from diverse backgrounds to contribute their views. “This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking,” he added.

He warned against rushing such reforms, underscoring the need for thorough deliberation and input from all stakeholders. According to him, focusing exclusively on increased government revenue collection is insufficient without considering the broader impact on the nation and its regions.

“Furthermore, the government must sensitize the people and secure their buy-in for any policy changes. Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail,” Obi wrote.

He concluded by urging the government to prioritize transparency, careful deliberation, and public engagement, stating that such an approach is crucial for fostering a participatory democracy.
