Syrian rebels declared a “new era” on Sunday, asserting that President Bashar al-Assad had abandoned the country. They urged citizens living abroad to return to a “free Syria” and proclaimed that Damascus is now liberated from the “tyrant.”

“The tyrant Bashar al-Assad has fled, and we announce the liberation of the city of Damascus,” the rebel factions stated via Telegram. They expressed hope that “after 50 years of oppression under Baath rule and 13 years marked by crimes, tyranny, and forced displacement, we can now proclaim the end of this dark chapter and usher in a new era for Syria.”
