The Sudanese government on Sunday vehemently dismissed a United Nations-backed report claiming that famine has spread to five regions of the country.
The report, issued by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), followed warnings from UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, and the United States about the severe hunger crisis in Sudan, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict.
According to the IPC, the war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has created famine conditions for 638,000 people, with an additional 8.1 million at risk of starvation.
In response, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement rejecting the IPC’s findings, describing the report as speculative and flawed.
The ministry accused the IPC of procedural shortcomings and a lack of transparency, stating that the team did not have access to updated field data and failed to consult with Sudan’s technical team before publishing the report.
“The description of the situation in Sudan as a famine is categorically rejected,” the statement declared.
The IPC has yet to respond to the Sudanese government’s criticism.
