South Korea’s Interior Minister, Lee Sang-min, resigned on Sunday amid the political upheaval caused by the recent declaration of martial law, local media reported.
According to the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, Lee announced his decision, stating he bore “grave responsibility for failing to serve the public and the president effectively.” President Yoon Suk Yeol accepted his resignation, the report said.
Both Lee and Yoon are under investigation for alleged insurrection tied to the controversial declaration of martial law on Tuesday.
President Yoon, who narrowly survived an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday, was compelled to revoke the martial law decree after lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected it.
Additionally, police arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun earlier on Sunday. Kim, who oversaw the martial law operation, had already been subjected to a travel ban.
