Two individuals attempting to steal solar streetlights in Ogobiri community, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, were electrocuted.
A community source revealed on Saturday that the bodies were discovered in the morning near the New Site of Niger Delta University and the Ogobiri roundabout.
An eyewitness stated that the thieves had already dismantled four streetlight poles and were working on a fifth one when tragedy struck.
“They had loosened four poles and were working on the fifth when it fell onto nearby high-tension wires. Unfortunately, there was power at the time, and they got electrocuted,” the eyewitness explained.
One of the thieves was reportedly burnt beyond recognition, reduced to ashes at the scene, while the other died instantly. The remains of the second thief were taken to the mortuary, while the fallen streetlight poles remained scattered by the roadside.
According to local sources, streetlight theft is a common issue in the area, and the incident is expected to deter further attempts.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Musa Mohammed, stated he had not yet received a report on the incident. “I have not received the report,” he said.
