The Deputy Senate Leader and Senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Architect Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, has announced the commencement of a landmark tourism and sports development project at the historic Imole Boja Rock Shelter in Odo-Owa, Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to his social media post on Saturday, December 14, Senator Ashiru reflected on his earlier visit to the site in March, where an on-the-spot assessment was conducted to guide the planning for a sports and recreation center.
On Thursday, a team of engineers from the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), led by Mr. Afolabi Osalusi, formally took over the site to begin the project.
The senator also unveiled 3D designs and architectural perspectives of the proposed development, showcasing plans to enhance the rock shelter’s aesthetic and functional appeal.
“This initiative will enhance the beauty of Imole Boja Rock Shelter, one of the iconic tourist attractions in our senatorial district.
“It will also promote physical activities among our youths, advance sports development, boost the local economy, and increase tourism traffic to the area. As always, no one will be left behind,” he said.
The Imole Boja Rock Shelter, located in Ipekun on the outskirts of Odo-Owa, is a natural marvel and cultural treasure of Kwara State.
The massive rock formation features numerous chambers, including a spacious main hall capable of accommodating 50 to 100 people.
Historically, the rock served as a wartime refuge for the Kajola community, particularly for women and children. It also provided a secret sanctuary for unmarried maidens during times of societal conflict.
Today, the shelter stands as a unique architectural and geological wonder, attracting visitors for its cultural and natural significance. The new sports and recreation center aims to preserve this heritage while adding modern facilities to promote tourism and community engagement.
The project is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the community, fostering economic growth through increased tourism and providing opportunities for youth development through sports. The integration of sports and tourism at the site aligns with Senator Ashiru’s broader vision of leveraging local resources to create sustainable development across Kwara South.
As construction begins, stakeholders and community members are optimistic that this initiative will transform the Imole Boja Rock Shelter into a leading tourist destination, while preserving its historical significance for future generations.
