The English Football Association (FA) has revealed it received assurances from Saudi Arabia regarding the safety and inclusion of LGBTQ fans at the 2034 FIFA World Cup, a commitment that influenced its decision to support the Gulf nation’s successful bid to host the tournament.
In a statement, the FA emphasized that Saudi officials pledged to provide an environment where all visitors, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity, would feel “safe and welcome.”
The assurances come amid global concerns about the treatment of LGBTQ individuals in the kingdom, where homosexuality remains criminalized and punishable under law.
“The FA has consistently advocated for inclusion and respect in football and will continue to seek guarantees that align with these values,” the association stated.
Saudi Arabia’s bid for the World Cup drew widespread scrutiny from human rights groups and LGBTQ advocates, who questioned whether the country’s conservative laws and societal norms could accommodate FIFA’s principles of equality and inclusion.
The kingdom, however, has recently taken steps to project a more open and modern image on the global stage, hosting major international events and implementing limited social reforms.
Critics remain cautious, arguing that assurances on paper must translate into action. Amnesty International urged FIFA to establish clear mechanisms to monitor human rights conditions and ensure Saudi Arabia fulfills its promises.
“Hosting a tournament of this magnitude comes with the responsibility of upholding the values of equality and human rights that FIFA claims to champion,” Amnesty International said in a statement.
The 2034 World Cup marks Saudi Arabia’s debut as a host nation for football’s biggest event, positioning it as a pivotal moment for both the sport and the kingdom’s global reputation.
