President Joe Biden has formally pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, after Hunter faced convictions in two separate federal cases earlier this year.
The announcement came from the White House on Sunday evening.
Hunter, who is 54 years old, had previously pleaded guilty in September to a felony tax charge and was also convicted for making false statements in relation to a gun case.
In his statement, President Biden said, “Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the moment I took office, I vowed to refrain from interfering with the Justice Department’s processes, and I upheld that promise even as I witnessed my son being selectively and unjustly prosecuted.”
Biden added, “It is evident that Hunter was treated differently.”
Fox News reports that this decision to pardon his son represents a shift from Biden’s earlier statements to the media, in which he indicated he would not grant a pardon to Hunter.
