The Nigeria Police Force has firmly refuted allegations that Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun encouraged Nigerians to physically attack police officers who request to search their mobile phones.
Reports surfaced online featuring a viral image with the message: “Beat up any policeman who asks to check your phone, stone him if he has a gun, make sure you fight back because it is your right to have a phone,” allegedly attributed to the IGP.
In response, the Nigeria Police issued a statement through Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, calling the claims unfounded and misleading.
“The assertion is entirely false and lacks any truth,” the statement emphasized. “The IGP has not authorized any directive promoting violence against law enforcement personnel.”
Furthermore, the statement highlighted that the IGP urges citizens to report police misconduct through proper channels, reinforcing the importance of accountability and adherence to the law over violent measures.
