A Jeju Air passenger plane carrying 181 people, including 175 passengers and six crew members, crashed on Sunday in the South Korean city of Muan.
The aircraft, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, suffered a malfunction in its landing gear. It veered off the runway during landing, collided with a fence, and caught fire at the Muan County Airport.
According to South Korean media, the crash resulted in over 28 casualties, including fatalities and injuries. Two people were successfully evacuated to safety. Officials warn that the number of casualties may rise as recovery operations are still underway.
The South Jeolla Province Fire Service Headquarters confirmed the fire had been extinguished, but rescue teams are continuing efforts to retrieve passengers from the wreckage.
A fire department official told CNN that the plane had been “almost destroyed” by the flames. Further updates are expected as the investigation into the crash continues.
