The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on stakeholders from the North Central zone to convene and nominate a replacement for the former National Chairman, Dr. Iyiorchia Ayu, who resigned before completing his term.
This resolution was part of a communique issued after an emergency meeting held at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday. The meeting, chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara, focused on addressing internal party challenges and the state of its leadership.
The PDP has faced a leadership tussle following the appointment of Ambassador Umar Damagum as Acting National Chairman after Ayu’s exit. Damagum, who continues to hold the position of Deputy National Chairman (North), has been at the center of debates within the party.
In its communique, the BoT urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to prioritize the restoration of internal harmony, unity, stability, and public confidence. Wabara, reading the communique, emphasized the following resolutions:
The BoT expressed deep concerns over the current state of the party’s administration.
It demanded the NWC adhere to the PDP Constitution, including zoning NWC offices to the respective geopolitical zones.
The BoT criticized the NWC for repeatedly delaying the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
It urged the NWC to honor its commitment to convene the NEC meeting in February 2025, warning that further delays could worsen the party’s challenges.
The BoT called on North Central leaders to nominate a replacement for Ayu promptly.
It warned against personal ambitions overshadowing the party’s collective vision for a better Nigeria.
The BoT criticized the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, claiming they have worsened Nigerians’ living conditions.
It demanded the government review policies to alleviate hardship and manage national resources effectively.
Prominent BoT members present included former Senate Presidents David Mark and Adolphus Wabara, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, and others. However, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu were notably absent.
