The Ogun State Government has pledged to dismantle societal stereotypes and ensure inclusive opportunities for Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs).
This commitment extends to providing equitable job opportunities, accessible education, and tailored healthcare services to empower PLWDs across the state.
Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.3 billion people—16% of the population—experience significant disabilities. In Nigeria, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) reported in 2023 that 35.1 million Nigerians live with disabilities. Despite progress in awareness and legislation, PLWDs continue to face significant barriers in education, healthcare, employment, and social integration.
In honor of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, emphasized the administration’s ongoing efforts to create an inclusive and sustainable future. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” highlights the importance of empowering PLWDs to actively participate in policy-making and societal development.
Adeleye reiterated the Abiodun-led administration’s commitment to ensuring PLWDs are heard, their skills harnessed, and their potential realized. She stated, “As we amplify the voices of Persons with Disabilities, we recognize their potential as transformative leaders and agents of change. Their unique experiences and perspectives are invaluable in creating solutions that foster inclusivity and sustainability.”
The state has implemented various initiatives to support PLWDs, including:
Provision of Mobility Aids and Tools: Distribution of materials such as wheelchairs, digital educational devices, and professional working tools for different clusters of PLWDs.
Empowerment Programs: Facilitating leadership roles and ensuring the voices of PLWDs are represented in decision-making processes.
Accessibility Focus: Prioritizing inclusive education, healthcare services tailored to diverse needs, and equitable employment opportunities.
Adeleye also stressed the importance of collaboration between public and private stakeholders to achieve true inclusion. She noted, “To achieve an inclusive society, we will continue to work steadfastly through policies and strategies, ensuring that no one is left behind. Breaking down stereotypes and building opportunities for PLWDs remains a key priority.”
The Ogun State Government’s commitment underscores its role as a champion of inclusivity. Through consistent advocacy, tailored interventions, and strategic partnerships, the state is laying the foundation for a society where PLWDs are not just supported but celebrated as leaders and contributors to sustainable progress.
