On Monday, the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) launched a statewide public awareness campaign aimed at minimizing fire outbreaks during the harmattan season.
According to Ayoola Michael Shola, the spokesperson for the command, this initiative responds to a recent increase in fire incidents in Ilorin, the state capital.
The campaign was executed by the Crisis Management Department of the NSCDC, specifically through its Disaster Management Unit.
Chibuzo Odeyemi, head of the unit, stated that the program is tailored to educate residents in high-risk areas, including markets and densely populated neighborhoods, on effective fire prevention, preparedness, and response strategies.
As part of this effort, NSCDC personnel visited several locations such as Ipata Market, Oja Oba Market, Mandate Market, Oja Tuntun, and Shao Garage, engaging with traders, motorists, and the community at large about common fire hazards, particularly the improper handling of flammable materials. They emphasized crucial safety measures and emergency response protocols.
Odeyemi reiterated the NSCDC’s statutory role in disaster management and rescue operations, highlighting the importance of public awareness on human actions that can trigger disasters, and urged citizens to avoid such practices.
She encouraged all residents to follow the safety tips shared and remain vigilant in preventing fire-related incidents throughout the harmattan season.
