Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has assured workers that his administration will commence payment of the newly approved minimum wage of N70,500 starting with the December salaries.
This announcement comes amidst an ongoing workers’ strike that has resulted in the closure of government offices across the state.
The governor made the pledge during the inauguration of the remodeled office of the deputy governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, in Lafia. Governor Sule emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of citizens, particularly civil servants in both state and local government roles.
He urged the striking workers to reconsider their stance and return to work, reiterating that the approved minimum wage will be implemented this month. He also assured workers that salaries would continue to be paid promptly.
The workers’ strike was initiated in protest against the alleged failure of the state government to implement the N70,000 minimum wage mandated by federal law. Mobilized by labor union leaders, workers shut down ministries, departments, and agencies to press their demands.
Comrade Ismaila Okoh, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa State, criticized the government for failing to formally commit to the minimum wage despite several negotiations.
“All offices will remain shut until the state government reconsiders its position and begins payment of the N70,000 minimum wage,” Okoh stated.
