The Kwara South Youths Congress has issued a strong statement disowning the proposed “Kwara South for Kwara North 2027 Agenda” summit, describing it as a “make-belief and cosmetic approach” to push the agenda of a few personalities in the name of Kwara South.
The group, in a statement issued on Saturday by its Coordinator, Ambassador Fola Daniel, accused the organizers of the summit of being “political jobbers” who are desperate to sell their paymasters’ agenda, which is geared towards reawakening godfatherism politics in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the Kwara South Youths Congress, the proposed summit is “dead on arrival” due to its theme, which they described as “misleading” and “divisive.” The group stated that the theme, “A new dawn in Kwara quest for equity, fairness & justice: Kwara South for Kwara North (2027 Agenda),” is a clear indication that the summit is not about promoting the interests of Kwara South, but rather about advancing the personal interests of a few individuals, mainly within the state government mechanism.
The Kwara South Youths Congress also expressed concern that the summit is another partisan gathering to use the Kwara South name for political transactions without protecting the region’s interests. The group emphasized that they will not allow “political desperados” to trade with the Kwara South name and that they will continue to protect the interests of the region.
Furthermore, the Kwara South Youths Congress pointed out that the position of Nigeria’s Constitution is clear on zoning, and that there is no agreement on zoning of governorship in Kwara State. The group emphasized that competence, experience, and exposure should take center stage as the state approaches the 2027 electioneering process.
“We will not be party to any arrangement that seeks to undermine the interests of Kwara South,” said Ambassador Fola Daniel. “We urge all stakeholders to be cautious of the intentions of the organizers of the proposed summit, and to ensure that they are not used as pawns in their political games.”
Ambassador Fola Daniel questioned the lineup of the supposed conveners, asking relevant questions about the exclusion of notable leaders from Kwara South, which included: Sen. Oyelola Issa Ashiru (Deputy Senate Leader), Alhaji Oladimeji Abdulraheem (Jangunmolu Of Igomina land), Alhaji Tajudeen Owoyemi (Asiwaju of Offa land), Retired Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan ( Asiwaju of Oro Kingdom) and host of others, the group reiterated that the proposed summit is a political machinery sponsored by people in government using political jobbers.
The group further alleged that, in a meeting held on Tuesday, there were mainly people from the ruling party in the state. According to a report released after the meeting, the state governor was said to have addressed the organizers.
“The Governor, who joined the summit via Zoom, confirmed his full support for the initiative and canvassed for more unity among the leaders of the district, adding that his administration is doing everything possible to move the state from being a consumption to a production state,” the report stated.
However, the Kwara South Youths Congress advised Engr. Dr. Johnson B.O. Adewumi, founder of Thomas Adewunmi University, desist from being used as a political machinery for the actualization of a few individuals’ interests at the detriment of Kwara South.
“Dr. Adewunmi is a successful individual, and we are proud of him,” said Ambassador Fola Daniel. “It’s essential to remind him of the hypocrisy under his nose. We will not fold our arms while he is being used to play the divide-and-rule game in Kwara South. We have thousands of Adewunmi who will reject his new agenda.”
