The Garun Mallam Local Government Area in Kano State has ordered the indefinite closure of the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market following allegations of prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral activities within its premises.
The decision, aimed at restoring order, was prompted by reports of misconduct involving youths and married women. The Council Chairman, Aminu Kadawa, confirmed the closure, issuing a seven-day ultimatum for all occupants to vacate the market or face legal action.
“Given how the market has turned into a hub for prostitution and other immoral acts, contrary to its original purpose, it had to be closed indefinitely to restore sanity,” Kadawa stated. He added that a reopening date would be announced once order is restored.
The move received backing from Kano’s Commissioner of Tourism and Management, Aisha Saji, who described it as a necessary step to address ongoing issues. Saji recalled her previous tenure as Commissioner for Women Affairs, during which she led a security and Hisbah raid at the same market. The operation resulted in the arrest of 43 individuals, including 34 females and nine males aged 15 to 18, for alleged prostitution and illegal alcohol sales.
“Shockingly, 14 of those arrested tested positive for HIV, with 10 aware of their status and four unaware. The suspects were not only from Kano but also from neighboring states like Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba,” Saji revealed.
Saji also reiterated her earlier recommendation for the demolition of the market to make way for a skill acquisition center. “This closure should not only end the immoral activities but also serve as a foundation for community development,” she said.
She emphasized that establishing a skills development center in the area would tackle unemployment and provide youths with sustainable livelihoods.
“This step is critical for the future of our young people and the economic progress of the region,” Saji concluded.
