Ibokun FC claimed the prestigious 2024 Governor’s Cup title on home soil after a thrilling tournament that saw 22 teams from across the Ijesa North Federal Constituency vying for glory.
The competition, proudly sponsored by renowned human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi, concluded on Tuesday, December 24, with Ibokun FC defeating Ijebu-Ijesa FC 1-0 in a hard-fought final.
The road to the final was marked by intense matchups, including Ibokun FC’s narrow 2-1 victory over Esa-Oke FC in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Ijebu-Ijesa FC edged past Ipetu-Ijesa FC in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
In the grand finale held at the Ibokun stadium, Adeyemo Opeyemi’s decisive goal in the first half secured the championship for Ibokun FC.
Jubilant fans, players, and residents celebrated the historic victory at the final whistle.
“It is very special to win in your hometown. This is the best Christmas and New Year gift. We will celebrate joyously,” said Olu, a resident of Ibokun. Another spectator, Tolulope, remarked, “The players did not disappoint us. It was a fierce contest, but I’m glad that we won.”
Elder Kola Adewusi, Deputy Governor of Osun State, presented a cheque of ₦2 million to Ibokun FC as champions of the tournament.
Runners-up Ijebu-Ijesa FC received ₦1 million from the Owaloko of Iloko-Ijesa, Oba Akeem Olusayo Ogungbangbe, while Ipetu-Ijesa FC, the second runner-up, was awarded ₦500,000 by the Elegboro of Ijebu-Ijesa, Oba Moses Ilufemiloye Agunsoye.
Additionally, the tournament’s favorite player received two all-expense-paid trips to any African country of his choice alongside other prizes.
The final match was graced by several notable figures, including Fuji music legends Saheed Osupa and Taye Currency.
Other attendees included Oba Akeem Ogungbangbe (Owaloko of Iloko-Ijesa), Oba Moses Agunsoye (Elegboro of Ijebu-Ijesa), Hon. Diran Odeyemi (Chairman of the Governing Council, Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke), and Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi (Irekandu), the lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Adewusi commended Pelumi Olajengbesi for his unwavering support of sports and community development.
He called for unity among residents of the Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency to bolster developmental initiatives.
“Competitions like this not only showcase young talents but also foster unity and progress. The Osun State government remains committed to using sports as a tool for societal growth,” Adewusi stated.
Traditional leaders, represented by Oba Akeem Ogungbangbe, also lauded Olajengbesi’s efforts in youth empowerment and development.
In his remarks, Pelumi Olajengbesi reiterated his vision of discovering and nurturing football talents. He disclosed plans for recruitment agencies to scout exceptional players, providing them opportunities to advance their careers internationally.
The 2024 Governor’s Cup has undoubtedly left a lasting legacy in Ijesa North, celebrating the spirit of competition while paving the way for future football stars.
