In response to the emergence of the newly identified XEC COVID-19 variant, currently detected in 29 countries, the Federal Government has instructed chief medical directors and medical directors of tertiary hospitals to activate alert systems for prompt detection and response to COVID-like symptoms.
A circular, referenced DHS/INSPDIV/017/VOL.1/46 and dated December 5, 2024, was issued by Dr. O. N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division for the Permanent Secretary. The document highlighted the variant’s growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health systems.
The circular, titled “Letter of Conveyance in Respect of the Newly Detected XEC COVID-19 Variant,” states:
“I am directed to inform you of the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, reported in Australia and now present in 29 countries globally. This variant has demonstrated a growth advantage over other circulating strains, prompting concerns about its implications for public health.”
It further directed hospitals to immediately implement alert systems for heightened vigilance, emphasizing the importance of identifying potential cases promptly. The letter also urged committees to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to share critical data about the strain and strengthen monitoring protocols.
“Timely information sharing with stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be crucial for effective response strategies,” the circular emphasized.
The government reiterated the need for a coordinated response, urging medical institutions to prioritize the safety and well-being of the public.
