The Federal Executive Council (FEC), led by President Bola Tinubu, has officially approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University, in tribute to the nation’s former Head of State.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, made the announcement during a briefing with State House correspondents following the FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

“The University of Abuja will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University. The decision will require processing through the National Assembly for the necessary legislative changes,” Idris explained. “The FEC has resolved to write to the National Assembly to facilitate the name change in honor of the esteemed elder statesman.”

In addition to the renaming, Idris announced that the Federal Government will offer free train services to all Nigerians from December 20 to January 5, 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden of high transportation costs for vulnerable citizens.

“This free train service was also implemented during last Christmas and the Sallah period,” he noted. “Mr. President has approved this service to run nationwide from December 20 to January 5.”

Idris also conveyed that the FEC praised President Tinubu for his leadership over the past 18 months and affirmed their continued support for his programs. He added that the FEC will be on recess from December 18 to January 6, 2025.
