Grace Ike has made history as the first woman elected chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, in its 43-year existence.
Formerly the chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Ike was elected unopposed following the withdrawal of other contenders.
The newly elected executive team also includes Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria (VON) as vice chairman, Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as secretary, and Sandra Udeike of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) as treasurer. The swearing-in ceremony, supervised by the Credentials Committee, was conducted on Wednesday, with Ehidiamen Isibor administering the oath.
In her inaugural speech, Ike pledged to reposition the union, promote inclusivity, and foster progress. She acknowledged the significant role played by women in the council in achieving this historic milestone. A seasoned journalist with over two decades of experience, Ike, currently with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN), has previously worked with Independent Television (ITV) and Silverbird Television.
Ike also extended congratulations to the newly elected NUJ National President, Yahya Alhassan, and reaffirmed the FCT Council’s commitment to supporting the national body. The new executive team will serve a three-year term, focusing on unity, excellence, and growth within the union.
