Thierry Jacob, a former world boxing champion from France, has passed away at the age of 59, as announced by the mayor of his hometown, Calais, on Friday.
“We start the day with sorrowful news. Thierry Jacob has died overnight, far too young,” wrote Natacha Bouchart, the mayor of the northern port city, on Facebook.
Jacob captured the WBC super bantamweight title in 1992, achieving victory against Mexico’s Daniel Zaragoza in front of his home crowd in Calais.
He turned professional in 1984 and concluded his career a decade later with a record of 39 wins and 6 losses, losing his WBC title in his first defense against American Tracy Harris Patterson in New York.
Jacob’s legacy continues through his son, Romain Jacob, who followed in his father’s footsteps and won the European super featherweight title in 2014.
