Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has criticized northern leaders for their failure to foster development in the region despite holding power for over four decades.

Speaking during a town hall meeting for Christian leaders in northern Nigeria on Friday, Dogara highlighted the region’s persistent poverty, attributing it to the leaders’ lack of investment in impactful initiatives. The event, entitled “Church and Society: Tax Reforms and Matters Arising,” addressed various governance and development issues in the country.

Dogara emphasized that President Bola Tinubu should not be blamed for the North’s challenges, asserting that the South has not come to exploit northern interests. He stated, “We are all northerners, and it should be clear that President Tinubu or the South is not our problem; they have not come to cheat the North. This notion is unfounded.”

He further questioned the historical leadership in the region, stating, “For over 40 years, northerners have been in power. What have we accomplished? The North continues to suffer, impoverished by our own leaders.”
