Tragedy struck in the Laderin area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, as a 32-year-old water driller, Amusan Olanrewaju, lost his life in a well-digging accident.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday around 10 a.m. in Abule-Oko, Laderin, left residents in shock.
According to reports from the Ogun State Police Command, Olanrewaju had been hired by a resident to dig a well on their property.
While working inside the well, a bucket filled with sand, which was being pulled out using a rope, accidentally fell on his head. The impact rendered him unconscious.
Despite the quick intervention of emergency responders, Olanrewaju was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta. The hospital confirmed his death, and his body was released to his family for burial, at their request.
Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating, “The resident who hired Olanrewaju, identified as Olayinka, received a distress call about the accident. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.”
This incident echoes a similar tragedy reported on May 3, 2024, when two well diggers, Avade Clement and Achefon Edua, both from the Republic of Benin, died in another well accident in the Sama Laderin community. The duo, hired by Akinsaya Ganiyu, reportedly became trapped while working on a well.
Such incidents highlight the dangers faced by well diggers and the importance of prioritizing safety measures in such high-risk jobs.
