The colloquium on The Burden of Kidney Disease in Nigeria was held on Thursday, December 26, 2024 at General Hospital Offa. The event brought together medical professionals, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the growing burden of kidney problems in our community.

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

– To raise awareness about the prevalence and impact of kidney problems

– To discuss the causes, prevention, and management of kidney diseases

– To identify gaps in current healthcare policies and services related to kidney care

– To develop strategies for improving kidney health outcomes

 

KEY FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

 

1. Increasing Prevalence: Kidney problems are on the rise, affecting individuals of all ages and backgrounds but more endemic in the age bracket of 18-40 years.

2. Effects of Recreational Drugs: A high percentage of kidney disease cases are linked to the effects of consumption of recreational drugs especially among the youths.

3. Lack of Awareness: There is a significant lack of awareness about kidney health, risk factors, and preventive measures.

4. Inadequate Healthcare Infrastructure: Current healthcare infrastructure is inadequate to meet the growing demand for kidney care services.

5. Need for Multidisciplinary Approach: A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to address the complex issues surrounding kidney health which makes the Behavioral Centre project of the Galaxy Clique Offa a timely intervention.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS:

 

1. Increase Public Awareness: Launch public awareness campaigns to educate individuals about kidney health, risk factors, and preventive measures.

2. Improve Healthcare Infrastructure: Invest in upgrading healthcare infrastructure to provide adequate kidney care services.

3. Develop National Kidney Health Policy: Develop a comprehensive national policy to address kidney health issues.

4. Encourage Research and Collaboration: Encourage research and collaboration among medical professionals, researchers, and policymakers to develop effective solutions.

 

RESOLUTIONS:

 

The colloquium resolved to:

 

1. Establish a kidney health advocacy group to promote awareness and drive policy changes.

2. Develop a kidney health strategic plan to guide efforts in improving kidney health outcomes.

3. Collaborate with other organizations to access best practices and resources in kidney care in our community.

4. Establish immediately a Kidney Test Center at the General Hospital Offa with a view to upgrade to a full fledged Kidney Dialysis Center.

 

The colloquium was a resounding success, and we are committed to translating the recommendations and resolutions into actionable steps to address the burden of kidney problems in our community.
