Bayern Munich has officially retired the number five jersey as a tribute to Franz Beckenbauer, one of football’s all-time greats, following his passing on January 7, 2024.

Beckenbauer, affectionately known as “Der Kaiser” for his commanding influence on and off the pitch, leaves behind a legacy unmatched in football history.

The decision, announced on Bayern’s social media, ensures no player will wear the iconic jersey in the future.

Beckenbauer was instrumental in shaping Bayern’s and Germany’s football dominance, leading his national team to a European Championship in 1972 and the FIFA World Cup in 1974.

His club achievements include three consecutive European Cups and Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich during the 1970s.

Beyond his playing days, Beckenbauer enjoyed success as a manager, guiding Bayern to Bundesliga and UEFA Cup victories, and later served as the club’s president, further solidifying his legendary status.

“Forever our Kaiser,” Bayern’s heartfelt tribute read, marking the retirement of the number five jersey to honor the memory of a football icon.
